Cardinals cap flag football regular season at 4-4

By Charlie Sorrells
Web Prep Writer

AUSTIN – The Fairmont girls flag football team has resembled a phoenix more than a cardinal during the second half of its eight-game regular season this spring.
After opening the Minnesota Vikings-sponsored prep sport’s second-ever campaign with a 1-3 overall record, quarterback Audrina Suckow, receiver Adriana Leiding, line defender Maya Earhart and defensive back Allissa Moore have delivered top-10 individual performances to help the Cardinals close the regular season with three wins in the last four games.
Fairmont dropped a 34-19 decision to unbeaten New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva (8-0) in Sunday’s initial game in Austin before outdueling Waterville-Elysian-Morristown in a back-and-forth shootout, 32-26, in Game 2 to improve to 4-4 overall.
The Cardinals netted the District 4, Gold Division’s No. 3 seed and will open the playoffs against Purple Division No. 2 seed Lakeville North at 6:30 PM Sunday, May 31, in Waterville. Gold champion NRHEG plays Purple Division No. 4 seed Lakeville South at 5:30 PM in their postseason opener at 5:30 PM May 31.
In the lower half of District 4, Farmington plays Austin in a 5:30 PM opener, followed by WEM battling FIT Academy of Apple Valley at 6:30 PM in opening-round action. The District 4 semifinals are scheduled for 7:30 PM, with the championship round slated for 8:30 PM. All of the District 4 games will be played May 31 in Waterville.
“Our girls have done a great job of making adjustments to everything we (coaching staff) have thrown at them during the last couple of weeks to get back to .500,” said Fairmont head coach Mat Mahoney, whose lineup compiled a 6-3 overall mark during the sport’s debut in 2025.
Suckow, who’s thrown for 1,468 yards and 21 TDs this spring, scorched the airwaves by connecting on 78% of her passes – 28 of 36 – en route to a game-best 207 yards and five touchdowns to help Fairmont outlast the WEM Bucs by six points during their back-and-forth clash on Sunday.
Suckow bookended Game 8 of the regular season – which featured seven lead changes – with TD strikes to the sure-handed Leiding to exit Wescott Field’s artificial surface with a win.
Leiding – who’s garnered 86 receptions for 685 yards and nine TDs in 2026 – capped a seven-play scoring drive with a 5-yard catch from Suckow with only 25 seconds remaining to erase a 26-25 deficit. The two Cardinal standouts combined skills again for the 1-point conversion.
Leiding, who finished Sunday’s two-game span with 31 catches for 233 yards, pocketed her second of four TDs on the split twinbill via a 5-yard spiral from Suckow during the opening series of the first half. Fairmont’s senior quarterback then zipped a 1-point conversion pass to Leiding for a 7-0 lead.
Allissa Moore, who ranks among the state leaders with 8 interceptions, pocketed an Alenka Jans’ spiral for one of her two defensive gems on the weekend near midfield and returned it to the Bucs’ 11 to put the Cardinal offense back in business.
WEM’s Kalyn Novak, however, returned the favor and then some by intercepting Suckow at the goal line and sprinting 50 yards for a pick-6 score three snaps later. Novak also caught the 1-point pass from Jans for the game’s only tie at 7-all.
Leiding delivered a 4-yard scoring reception from Suckow for a 13-7 lead for Fairmont before Jans launched a 45-yard TD missile to Kalyn Novak to even the score. Jans then connected with Brooklyn Novak for the conversion pass at 14-13 lead.
With time winding down, Suckow found Moore for a pivotal 16-yard TD in the right corner of end zone to swing a 19-14 lead back to the Cardinals with less than a minute remaining before halftime.
Jans and Kalyn Novak answered again for the Bucs to open the second half – this time from 9 yards out – for a 20-19 edge. Moore elevated to haul in a 4-yard scoring spiral from Suckow to regain the lead at 25-20, but WEM would counter again.
Kalyn Novak – who finished with eight catches for 120 yards – pulled in her third TD of the game from 3 yards out to cling to a 26-25 lead. Suckow then utilized Kate Hagen and Leiding to march the length of the field before spotting Leiding for a 5-yard TD completion. The two connected again for the 1-point conversion before Moore iced the win with her second interception of the game with 5 seconds remaining.
In Sunday’s opener, Quinn Vanmaldeghem discovered five different methods to generate points in power the Gold Division champion NHREG Panthers to a 34-19 triumph over Fairmont at Wescott Field in Austin.
Vanmaldeghem scored on a 20-yard run, caught a 29-yard TD pass from quarterback Gabby Schlaak, tossed a 2-point conversion pass to Ezra Boerner, returned the final one of her game-best three interceptions for a 30-yard TD and then corraled a 1-point conversion throw from Schlaak.
Vanmaldeghem added a 6-yard scoring catch from Schlaak and another six-pointer via a 3-yard throw from Schlaak during the second half to finish with all five of the Panthers’ TDs. Boerner added a 1-point conversion reception from Schlaak.
Vanmaldeghem’s initial pick-off set up her 29-yard score to extend NRHEG’s lead to 14-0 before Fairmont answered with Suckow’s 5-yard scoring connection with Leiding. Moore grabbed the 1-point conversion throw from Suckow to pare the Cardinals’ deficit in half with 5 minutes to go before intermission. Suckow tipped away Schlaak’s last-second toss toward the end zone to prevent the Panthers from scoring just prior to the break.
The two teams combined to reel off four consecutive scoring drives after  Vanmaldeghem’s interception and solid secondary coverage by Chloe Darnell, Moore, Earhart and Maddie Johnson thwarted the second half’s initial three possessions.
Suckow inched the Cardinals within 14-13 on a 23-yard zipped TD pass to Hagen before Schlaak responded with a 6-yard scoring spiral to Vanmaldeghem. Schlaak hit Boerner for a 1-pointer and 21-13 margin for NRHEG.
Suckow then completed passes to Kylee Desjarlais for 11 and 10 yards before spotting Leiding for 4 and 5 more, respectively, to reach the 10. Suckow weaved through traffic to find the end zone on the next snap for a 21-19 lead.
Vanmaldeghem and Schlaak created breathing room on the scoreboard by answering with a 3-yard TD connection on the heels of Schlaak’s 20-yard spiral to Nora Flatness. Vanmaldeghem then sealed the Panthers’ win with a pick-6 from 30 yards out and caught the ensuing conversion pass from Schlaak.

Fairmont fends off FIT Academy, edges North in OT

By Charlie Sorrells
Web Prep Writer

WATERVILLE – Fairmont girls flag football mentor Mat Mahoney and his coaching staff went back to the basics during last week’s practice sessions and the ‘old school’ strategy paid dividends on Sunday.
Cardinal quarterback Audrina Suckow and receiver Adriana Leiding engineered a 20-point lead by intermission before defenders Allissa Moore, Maya Earhart, Chloe Darnell and Leamonie Wilson fended off FIT Academy’s second-half comeback to capture a 20-13 victory in Game 1 at Jon Bakken Field in Waterville.
Leiding and Suckow then went to the airwaves early, often and late, while Moore and Darnell topped the tip-drill defensive secondary coverage to outlast Lakeville North in the third overtime, 15-14, to even Fairmont’s overall record at 3-3 with the back-to-back wins in Week 3.
“The girls turned in a great week of practice and really locked down on the task at hand today,” said Mahoney. “We took some aspects out of our game plan, added a couple things here and there, but mainly we simplified our system.”
Moore pocketed her team-best sixth interception and returned the pick to FIT Academy’s 20-yard line to help set up Fairmont’s initial touchdown on Mother’s Day. Suckow – who erupted for an incredible 372 yards and five touchdowns on 47-for-63 passing during the two-game span – threaded spirals to Kate Hagen and Leiding to hit paydirt with three consecutive completions. Hagen made receptions of 10 and 7 yards, respectively, before Leiding grabbed Suckow’s 3-yard shuffle pass and side-stepped her way across the goal line for six points. Leiding added the 1-point conversion catch from Suckow for a 7-0 lead over FIT Academy.
Wilson and Moore defended the airwaves to limit FIT Academy to only three downs before regaining possession for Suckow & Offensive Company. Suckow bookended the 5-play scoring drive with 10- and 15-yard connections with Leiding to extend the Cardinals’ Game 1 lead to 13-0. The senior quarterback then zipped a 1-point pass to Moore to double the gap.
Earhart, who finished the twinbill with a team-best 14 flags captured, and defense slammed the brakes on FIT Academy at its own 22.
Moore reeled off an 8-yard run before Suckow spotted Hagen for a 6-yarder and Kylee Desjarlais for an 8-yard TD to grab a 20-0 lead by intermission.
Darnell turned in back-to-back catch-denying plays on second and third downs to keep FIT Academy out of the end zone from the Fairmont 12 just before halftime.
FIT Academy quarterback Naomi Winge hit Brianna Preston on a 4-yard score and later scored on a 10-yard keeper to pare Fairmont’s lead to 7, but Moore and Darnell proved worthy of the last-second challenge near the end zone to seal Fairmont’s win.
After battling to a scoreless first half for 18 of the initial 20 minutes, quarterback Lyra Gonzalez threaded a 2-yard scoring pass to Leila Martinez to stake Lakeville North to a 6-0 lead. Darnell tipped away the 1-point conversion pass to keep the Cardinals’ deficit at six by intermission.
Suckow answered the second-half challenge by utilizing the pass-catching skills of Moore and Leiding to march 45 yards to the equalizer. Moore made grabs of 16 and 11 yards, while Leiding nabbed a 10-yarder and later, an 8-yarder for the TD to knot the game at 6-all.
Wilson, Moore and Eya Kotewa stopped Lakeville North on a clutch 4th-down-and-2 situation near midfield to regain possession for Fairmont. Suckow lofted a 24-yard TD toss to Leiding for her fourth and final 6-pointer of the weekend. Leiding – who netted 24 catches for 181 yards during the two-game stint – added the 1-point conversion reception for a 13-6 lead.
Gonzalez drew Lakeville North even on the scoreboard by firing a 20-yard TD strike to Alex Loesch before the two worked their magic on a 1-point conversion to help force overtime.
Suckow zipped a 5-yard 1-point pass to Leiding for Fairmont’s only play of the first overtime before Gonzalez matched the solo tally when a completion to Loesch in the end zone.
Neither team scored from 10 yards out, leaving the tiebreaker depending on its third criteria of which team gains the most yards on one single play from each’s own 5.
Leiding hauled in a crossing pass from Suckow and covered 18 yards on the play, while Moore managed to tip the football away from a Lakeville North receiver to close out Fairmont’s 3-overtime win.
Fairmont (3-3) travels to Austin on Sunday, May 17, for Week 4 regular-season action against New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva at 4 PM and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown at 5 PM.

Cardinals fall to Bucs, Packers in Week 2

By Charlie Sorrells

NEW RICHLAND – Kaylyn Novak scored three touchdowns, including a pair from quarterback Alenka Jans, to power the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Bucs to a 27-0 decision over Fairmont during Sunday’s opener before Austin’s Eve Snater rushed for three TDs as the Packers staved off the Cardinals in Game 2, 19-14, in New Richland.
“WEM came out with a lot of energy and we didn’t match their intensity,” said Fairmont mentor Mat Mahoney. “Defensively, we didn’t read well in the middle of the field, and offensively, we just didn’t execute when we had some opportunities.
“We did a better job of adjusting in Game 2 against Austin, but couldn’t find a way to stop their running game. We played them to the wire and came up short, so it’s back to the drawing board.”
Fairmont defensive back/receiver Allissa Moore, who opened Week 1’s pair of games with three interceptions, delivered the first of her two picks during Sunday’s two-game span to slam the brakes on Austin’s second possession.
The Cardinals’ offense could not capitalize on the defensive gem, but Moore answered again with her second pick of the contest on the next Packer series by returning the football to the Austin 11. Quarterback Audrina Suckow – who threw for a 163 yards in Game 2 – connected on a 9-yard completion to Kylee Desjarlais, but Austin kept Fairmont out of the end zone on fourth down.
Snater, who amassed a game-best 167 yards on 10 carries, broke free for a 26-yard TD before quarterback Lexi Helgeson hit Finley Kemmerick with the 1-point pass to go ahead 7-0.
Suckow and Adriana Leiding countered quickly to even the score with only 51 seconds remaining before halftime. Suckow hit Desjarlais on a 13-yarder, tossed a 6-yard pass to Leiding and spotted Maya Earhart for 10 more yards to the Austin 10. Leiding spun her way across the goal line for the TD before catching Suckow’s 1-point conversion pass.
Moore, who rushed for a team-best 54 yards, utilized four totes to reach the Packers’ 12 to open the second half, but a fourth-down pass did not reach its mark. Snater needed only one touch and sprinted 38 yards to paydirt for her second TD of the game for a 13-7 lead.
Maddie Johnson and Chloe Darnell combined to halt Austin’s next drive to regain possession, and Suckow went to the airwaves to stake Fairmont to its first lead with 8:35 remaining. Suckow threaded a 10-yarder to the sure-handed Leiding before Moore ran to the 18. Suckow then spotted Moore behind the Austin secondary for a 32-yard TD strike before Earhart caught Suckow’s 1-point pass for a 14-13 margin.
Snater needed two carries, with the last one covering 35 yards to the end zone, to regain a 19-14 edge for the Packers as Darnell denied the 1-point conversion pass with 6 minutes to go.
Suckow went to the passing attack again and worked the Cardinals downfield with an 18-yarder to Earhart and later, a 12-yard connection with Leiding. Fairmont reached the Austin 10 following a Packer personal foul, but Suckow’s fourth-down completion to Leiding for the potential go-ahead TD was ruled just short of the goal line.
In Game 1, defense proved the first-half trend as Leamonie Wilson, Moore, Johnson and Darnell captured flags and defended passes for the majority of the initial 20 minutes. Kaylyn Novak, however, broke free on a 10-yard end-around run to snap the scoreless deadlock with 3 minutes left before intermission.
Jans, who threw for 163 yards and three TDs, connected on a key 11-yarder to Brooklynn Novak for a first down at midfield before hitting Bre’ana Masso on a 12-yarder to set up Kaylyn Novak’s scoring run. Masso also caught Jans’ 1-point conversion pass for a 7-0 lead.
Suckow then stymied WEM’s late drive by intercepting Jans with time winding down in the opening segment.
Despite Leiding pocketing six of her game-best 11 receptions during the second half, WEM prevented Fairmont from accessing the end zone for the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Jans zipped a 5-yard TD strike to Masso, a 7-yard scoring toss to Kaylyn Novak on a give-and-go play from the line of scrimmage and a 20-yard TD pass to Kaylyn Novak for good measure.
Wilson finished with 10 flags captured to pace Fairmont’s defense against WEM, while Suckow completed 19 of 28 passes for 119 yards to top the offense.
Fairmont (1-3) travels to Waterville next Sunday, May 10, to face FIT Academy of Apple Valley at 4 PM before battling Lakeville North in Game 2.

FAIRMONT – Allissa Moore and Leamonie Wilson garnered two interceptions apiece, and teammate Maya Earhart captured 10 flags to guide Fairmont’s defense to a season-opening flag football shutout, while quarterback Audrina Suckow threw for 205 yards and four touchdowns to power the Cardinals’ air attack to a 32-0 victory over the Austin Packers on Sunday. New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva’s Quinn Vanmaldeghem then produced all five of her team’s TDs and added an interception on defense for good measure to pounce the Panthers past Fairmont, 32-21, in Game 2 at Thomas Mahoney Field. “Our defense got us out to a fast start in Game 1 by picking off three passes to help set up two touchdowns to go up 19-0 by halftime against Austin,” Fairmont mentor Mat Mahoney said in reference to two interceptions by the sure-handed Moore and one from Wilson during the opener’s initial 20 minutes. “New Richland then scored on the very first play of Game 2 and we trailed by 13 before capturing the lead before halftime. “Their wideout (Quinn Vanmaldeghem) then scored on a couple of big plays in the second half, but our girls battled back from an 11-point deficit to close within 25-21 and gave ourselves a chance to win, but we just came up a little short. “I’m proud of the girls’ effort today and it feels good to get that first win under our belts during the first weekend of the regular season.” Earhart delivered three consecutive critical stops to force an early punt by Austin before Suckow connected on a clutch 30-yard pass to Moore, a 10-yarder to Kate Hagen and another 10-yard strike to Moore for a TD and 6-0 lead. Leamonie Wilson then displayed her defensive skills by picking off a Packers’ pass at midfield of the 50-yard playing area to put the Cardinal offense in business. Suckow zipped an 8-yard spiral to Moore before firing a 9- and an 8-yarder to Adriana Leiding for a score to double the lead to 12-0. Moore, who topped the district in interceptions last spring, slammed the brakes on Austin’s next two possessions by pocketing back-to-back interceptions. Moore’s return of the second pick-off to the Austin 15 set up Suckow’s 10-yard TD strike to Hagen. Hagen then caught Suckow’s 1-point conversion pass to extend Fairmont’s lead to 19-0 by intermission. The Cardinals then officially ended the game by the 30-point rule with 9 minutes remaining in the second half. Suckow went to the airwaves for connections to Hagen and Moore before firing a 23-yard throw and a 10-yard scoring strike to Moore again to widen the gap to 25-0. Chloe Darnell then alertly tipped a long Austin pass to Cardinal teammate Leamonie Wilson to halt the Packers’ ensuing march. Suckow put the game in the win column by completing passes of 3, 28 and 13 yards, respectively, to Hagen, Moore and Leiding before threading a 5-yard TD toss to Moore. Suckow hit Leiding on the 1-point conversion pass for the final 32-0 score.

Unfortunately for Fairmont, Quinn Vanmaldeghem’s sprinter’s speed and powerful running, combined with her pick-pocket receiving hands, proved too much in Game 2 on Sunday. Vanmaldeghem – who played an integral role in guiding the Panthers to the state basketball tournament in both 2025 and 2026 – broke free for a 45-yard vapor-trail TD on the first play to stake NRHEG to a quick 6-0 lead. Vanmaldeghem finished the game with game-bests of 118 yards and three scores on seven carries to complement seven receptions for 84 yards and two more TDs. Vanmaldeghem’s 41-yard catch off a Gabby Schlaak spiral later set up her 1-yard receiving score before Schlaak extended the margin to 13-0 on a 1-point conversion toss to Kenley Gehrke. Suckow and the Cardinals answered quickly by converting on fourth-and-5 when Fairmont’s senior quarterback zipped a 5-yarder to Leiding to move the first-down marker. Suckow connected with Hagen on a pivotal 24-yarder to eventually set up her shuffle 2-yard pass to Moore. Hagen grabbed the 1-point conversion pass to narrow the Cardinals’ deficit to 13-7. Moore then utilized her vertical leap and great timing to knock away passes intended for Vanmaldeghem on third and fourth downs to regain possession for Fairmont with time winding down in the first half. Suckow connected on a 17-yarder to Leiding to reach the 1 before flipping a toss to Hagen for the TD. Suckow’s conversion pass to Leiding staked the Cardinals to a 14-13 halftime lead. Schlaak’s interception to open the second half led to the NRHEG quarterback’s 1-yard TD toss to Vanmaldeghem to retake the lead at 19-14. After forcing two Fairmont incompletions and a punt, Vanmaldeghem’s slashing and twisting 32-yard run hit paydirt for the Panthers to create a 25-14 lead. Suckow answered with a 26-yard scoring strike to Leiding before the two connected again on the conversion to whittle the Cardinals’ deficit to 25-21. Moore later pocketed her third interception of the day, but Fairmont couldn’t convert the turnover into points. Vanmaldeghem put the game out of reach with a 10-yard TD trot before teammate Olivia Berg pocketed an interception with less than a minute left in regulation. Fairmont (1-1) travels to New Richland next Sunday, May 3, for a 4 PM kickoff against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown before squaring off against Austin in the 5 PM game.

FAIRMONT – Prior to Fairmont’s first-ever flag football practice on April 21, freshman Allissa Moore and her Cardinal teammates had never either run or defended a ‘6’ passing route. In fact, Moore and her fellow defensive backs and receivers had not even heard of any of the routes in head coach Mat Mahoney’s offensive playbook.
Oh, the difference two months under the watchful guidance of Mahoney, defensive coordinator Brad Johnson, offensive coordinator Courtney Schoellerman, assistant coach Ashley Scheevel and high school volunteer Brett Williams can make – and did during the Cardinal program’s debut season.
After losing its first two games of the spring campaign, Fairmont reeled off six consecutive victories to earn a share of the Minnesota Vikings-sponsored District 4, Gold Division regular-season crown. The Cardinals went on to lose a 34-14 first-round playoff game to Bloomington to finish with an impressive 6-3 record.
“Truthfully, I had no idea of what to expect out of our players, but I’m extremely proud of their hard work and dedication to learning the game,” said Mahoney, who’s also Fairmont High School’s head football coach in the fall and activities director. “I think the girls learned a lot from our coaching staff, but I also believe it worked vice versa in the fact that we learned a lot from them.”
In addition to the team’s 66.7 percent winning clip, Mahoney was impressed when seven of the program’s flag footballers earned all-District 4 honors for their performances on the 50-yard long gridiron this spring.
Moore became the first Cardinal in the sport to earn an individual postseason award on the strength of her 10-interception performance in only nine games. The District 4 Defensive Player of the Year topped the league’s interception charts, highlighted by a pair of pick-6s by returning two for touchdowns.
“Allissa was always in the right spot on defense,” said Mahoney. “She possesses good speed so she was able to close on any underthrown passes by the opposing quarterback and pick them off.
“Allissa and Chloe Darnell – who had five interceptions on the season – really made it difficult on the other teams’ offenses.” Moore also contributed nine catches for 125 yards and one touchdown in her role as a part-time receiver.
Junior quarterback Audrina Suckow, freshman receiver Adriana Leiding, senior receiver/defensive back Kaymarie Desjarlais, junior receiver Kylee Desjarlais, senior center/tight end Norah Traetow and senior defensive liner/tight end Macy Smith joined Moore as Cardinals meriting selection to the all-district team. Suckow displayed her accurate arm by completing 170 of 265 passes for a clip of 64.2% en route to 1,525 yards and 28 touchdowns. In fact, Suckow established an incredible mark of 20 consecutive completions during the Cardinals’ 41-0 win over Hopkins. “Audrina had a huge season for us,” said Mahoney. “She picked up the plays and the game’s terminology quickly, had a positive attitude on and off the field, and always learned from her mistakes to improve steadily throughout the year.”
Leiding and Kaymarie Desjarlais proved the key receivers on the opposite end of Suckow’s spirals this spring. Leiding, a fleet-footed freshman, topped Fairmont’s offensive charts with 72 catches for 634 yards and 14 Tds – including the only two 6-point scores in the playoff loss to Bloomington.
“Adri proved to be our sparkplug on offense,” said Mahoney. “She possesses great hand-eye coordination, plus she’s so athletic that she’s able to get away from defenders with a quick spin or juke move.” Kaymarie Desjarlais also proved a valuable receiver in the Cardinals’ offense by garnering a second-best team total of 38 receptions for 327 yards and eight touchdowns. The senior co-captain also pocketed one of Fairmont’s 20 interceptions.
“Kaymarie was truly a valuable player for us in the fact she was our only player who played both offense and defense on a regular basis, game in and game out,” said Mahoney. “She has great hands, and a good understanding of the game on both sides of the line of scrimmage.”
Kylee Desjarlais, the junior sibling to Kaymarie, proved a key player on offense by making 24 receptions for 211 yards and four Tds. “Kylee was yet another player with good hands and always knew where to go on the field,” said Mahoney. “She and Adri were our two best receivers to make plays in the red zone as conversion specialists.”
Traetow, a senior co-captain, perfected the skills of the Cardinals’ center position and evolved into a solid receiver on underneath-coverage routes, finishing with 27 catches for 244 yards.
“Norah did a great job of snapping the football, and also had a good feel for finding the open spots in the opposing defenses to make clutch catches for us. She was a very good possession receiver for us, too,” said Mahoney.
Smith, one of Fairmont Area’s top defenders during the fall soccer season, made a smooth transition to flag football this spring. The senior co-captain pocketed one interception from her defensive line position, and contributed three catches for 33 yards in a limited receiving role.
“Macy and Maya (Earhart) evolved into our unsung heroes in the defensive trenches,” said Mahoney. “They both perfected the specific skill of pulling flags, which is more difficult than people think, and both did a nice job of containing the opposing quarterback and running game.”
“We (coaching staff) will miss our seniors next spring and appreciate all of their contributions to building the foundation for this program, and look forward to working with the girls we have coming back,” said Mahoney.

Bloomington tops Fairmont in District Flag Football

LAKEVILLE – Bloomington took a page out of Fairmont’s guide to success in flag football during Sunday’s District 4 playoff opener on the artificial turf at Lakeville South High School.
Junior quarterback Allie Sheehan threw for 182 yards and four touchdowns, while defensive backs Macie Miller, Angel Tillman and Cora Bassett pocketed interceptions to propel Bloomington to a 34-14 victory over the late arrivals to end the Cardinals’ debut season with a 6-3 overall record.
Fairmont seniors Kaymarie Desjarlais, Norah Traetow and Macy Smith received their high school diplomas after a one-hour ceremony, made the 130-mile trip to Lakeville, stretched out and warmed up for a half-hour before ‘kickoff.’ The senior trio etched their names in the program’s history books and created a solid foundation for its future.
“The high school did a great job of accommodating our players, without taking anything away from the whole graduation process, while the (Minnesota) Vikings and other district teams helped out by adjusting the playoffs’ time schedule so we had the opportunity to play,” said Fairmont head coach Mat Mahoney. “This entire season has been an awesome experience for the student-athletes, coaches and fans, and we look forward to next season and every one after that.”
Defensive back Chloe Darnell pocketed her fifth interception near the goal line – and the Cardinals’ 20th as a team – to slam the brakes on Bloomington’s initial march to Fairmont’s 15-yard line.
Darnell returned the pick to Fairmont’s 18 before quarterback Audrina Suckow connected on a 12-yard pass to Allissa Moore and a 7-yarder to Adriana Leiding to reach Bloomington territory at the 13 only to have Macie Miller bat away a fourth-down conversion pass to take over on downs.
Moore later returned the favor by tipping away Bloomington’s fourth-down pass at Fairmont’s 6 to keep the playoff clash scoreless with time winding down in the 20-minute opening half.
Sheehan, who plays shortstop on Bloomington Kennedy’s softball team in the spring, then displayed her strong and accurate arm to strike like lightning from long distance with only 31 seconds to go before intermission. Sheehan tossed an in-the-air 45-yard TD strike to 6-foot-2 receiver Chloe Golden to erase the zeroes on the scoreboard. Kaymarie Desjarlais tipped Bloomington’s 2-point conversion pass to keep the Cardinals’ deficit at 6-0.
Despite back-to-back completions from Suckow to Leiding to reach the Fairmont 20, Miller intercepted a long-range throw and returned the defensive gem 35 yards to paydirt for a pick-6 with only 4 seconds left before halftime. Sheehan connected with Cate Forster for the 2-pointer for a 14-0 lead at the break.
“Our defense has done the same thing to a lot of other teams this season, only it went in the other direction this time. It’s part of the game, and Bloomington is a great team, especially in their defensive secondary,” said Mahoney.
Tillman proved Mahoney's point by opening the second half with her team-leading fifth interception of the spring before returning it to the Cardinals’ 9. Sheehan needed only one snap to find Ally Reemer for the TD before the 2-point pass failed to leave Bloomington’s margin at 20-0.
“Our players showed their resilience and never gave up. After being down by three scores, the girls played even with Bloomington down the stretch, and I’m extremely proud of their determination and effort,” said Mahoney.
After Maya Earhart made a momentum-seizing flag pull to force Bloomington to punt, Suckow and Leiding worked their air magic by connecting five consecutive times to account for Fairmont’s first seven points of the playoff game.
Suckow, who threw for a game-best 210 yards, zipped strikes of 19, 6, 10 and 10 yards, respectively, to the sure-handed Leiding for a TD. Suckow fired once again to Leiding for the 1-point conversion to tighten the score at 20-7.
Sheehan later matched Suckow’s accurate passing performance by hitting Amelia Hanson on three of her ensuing four completions in a row to gain the end zone. Sheehan found Hanson on an 18-yarder and another spiral for 6 more before lofting a 5-yarder to Stella Livesay to reach the Fairmont 16. Sheehan then launched a perfect fade to Hanson, who made an incredible one-handed catch for the score and a 26-7 lead with 6 minutes remaining.
Bassett’s interception on the Cardinals’ first-down pass and return to the 3 set up another Sheehan-to-Hanson TD pass. Sheehan threaded a 2-point spiral to Astonia Martin to cap Bloomington’s point production at 34-7 with 4 minutes to go.
Suckow and Fairmont did not exit quietly as the Cardinals marched the length of the field to score on a 5-yard Leiding reception. Suckow then hit Kaymarie Desjarlais for the 1-point conversion to inch within 20 on the scoreboard.

LAKEVILLE – Interception Incorporated.
Fairmont trailed only twice during the final two regular-season flag football games on Sunday before the Cardinals’ sure-handed defense controlled the passing airwaves to reverse the momentum in their direction on the artificial turf at Lakeville South High School.
Chloe Darnell pocketed two interceptions, while leading flag-grabber Maya Earhart, Kaymarie Desjarlais and Macy Smith supplied one pick apiece to help set up half of quarterback Audrina Suckow’s 10 passing touchdowns in a sweep of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and Lakeville North during Week 4 action.
Fairmont doubled up WEM by a 26-13 margin before dispatching Lakeville North 39-13 to extend its seasonal winning streak to six consecutive games to cap the regular season.
The Cardinals (6-2) await the results of the playoff pairings that will determine their first-round district opponent, kickoff time and venue on Sunday, June 1. Teams must win their opener to advance to Round 2 of the district tournament later that day.
“Week after week, these girls just keep improving and every player has contributed a number of key plays to keep us on the winning path,” said Fairmont head coach Mat Mahoney. “Our defense really stepped up today and delivered some huge plays at critical times in both games.”
Mahoney’s postgame words proved as accurate as an Audrina Suckow spiral as Darnell’s first interception and return to WEM’s 9-yard line gave Fairmont a short field to hit paydirt. Suckow zipped a touchdown toss to Kaymarie Desjarlais on first down to stake the Cardinals to a quick 6-0 lead.
Quarterback Alenka Jans answered the challenge for WEM by connecting to Brooklyn Novack for a key 23-yard completion before spotting Robynn Schwichtenberg on a 26-yard sideline fade to knot the game. Jans then fired a 1-point conversion pass to Breana Masso to swing a 7-6 lead to WEM.
With 4 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half, Earhart pocketed an interception for Fairmont and returned the football to WEM’s 18. Suckow needed only one toss to find Adriana Leiding for a TD and a 12-7 lead. Suckow went on to finish the two-game span 46 of 65 passing for 374 yards and 10 scores, while Leiding combined for 19 catches, 164 yards and four Tds.
Kaymarie Desjarlais then delivered a pivotal pick only two snaps later, returning the interception to WEM’s 15. Suckow wasted no time in firing a 6-pointer to Leiding, who used a nifty spin move to gain the end zone. Suckow and Leiding connected on the conversion pass for a 19-7 halftime lead.
Jans responded with a 3-yard scoring strike to Schwichtenberg to open the second half to narrow WEM’s gap to 19-13 as the two defenses held their ground down the stretch. Earhart’s quick-reflex flag rip halted WEM’s next drive before Fairmont regained possession via a punt.
Suckow zipped passes of 18, 4 and 17 yards to Kaymarie Desjarlais, Leiding and Norah Traetow, respectively, to march downfield before finding Leiding on a 6-yard crossing route. Suckow and Leiding combined pitch-and-catch skills again for a 26-13 margin. Macy Smith, Earhart, Allissa Moore and Kaymarie Desjarlais eventually halted WEM’s late offensive drive at Fairmont’s 6 as time expired.
Traetow supplied seven receptions for 63 yards, while Kaymarie Desjarlais chipped in six catches for 53 yards and a score in Game 1.
Charley Ray flipped the script for Lakeville North in Fairmont’s second game on Sunday, returning a rare interception to Fairmont’s 5 during the second series. Eva Kurien grabbed the ensuing TD toss from Nova Beaulieu before Allissa Moore batted away the conversion pass to keep the game at 6-0.
Earhart later tipped North’s pass on a fourth-and-3 situation to regain possession for Fairmont. Suckow connected on passes to Traetow and Leiding to set up Kaymarie Desjarlais’ 4-yard TD catch to tie the game at 6-all.
Darnell’s second interception of the day three possessions later created another offensive opportunity for the Cardinals at their own 24. Suckow delivered three consecutive strikes to Leiding, with the last one resulting in a 5-yard score. Suckow hit Traetow on the conversion pass to widen Fairmont’s lead to 13-6 with 4 minutes left before intermission.
Suckow and Fairmont’s offense then shifted into high gear during the second 20-minute half, with the junior quarterback completing seven straight spirals during the next two series to widen the lead to 26-7. Traetow made a clutch 14-yard reception to convert a key fourth down for the Cardinals before Kylee Desjarlais caught Suckow’s 7-yard scoring pass. Suckow fired a 5-yard TD strike to Kaymarie Desjarlais following the Cardinals’ next fourth-down stop before shuffling a conversion pass to Leiding for a 19-point advantage.
Macy Smith’s interception and near pick-6 return to North’s 3 set up Kaymarie Desjarlais’ 2-yard TD catch with 8 minutes left in regulation. Suckow added a 3-yard scoring completion to Traetow and a 1-point conversion pass to Kylee Desjarlais to put the game away at 39-13.

LAKEVILLE – Defensive back Allissa Moore’s second of four interceptions during Sunday’s flag football doubleheader set up the first of quarterback Audrina Suckow’s seven touchdowns to help Fairmont squeeze by Eden Prairie in a defensive clash, 7-6, in Game 1 on Lakeville North’s artificial turf surface.
Moore pocketed two more picks, Maya Earhart supplied an interception off a Kaymarie Desjarlais defensive deflection, Leamonie Wilson garnered a pick, Suckow completed 20 consecutive passes en route to a Game 2-best 206 yards, while Adriana Leiding and Kaymarie Desjarlais combined for five receiving Tds to help the Cardinals flatten Hopkins 41-0 in a game shortened by the 35-point rule.
“We proved we can win a low-scoring defensive-oriented game in the opener today before converting six of our seven possessions into points on the scoreboard to pull away to a mercy-rule victory in the second game,” said Fairmont mentor Mat Mahoney, whose team improved to 4-2 overall on the strength of four consecutive triumphs during Weeks 2 and 3. “Macy Smith and Maya Earhart did a nice job along the defensive front of preventing Eden Prairie’s running backs from getting to the edge to keep us in a bend-but-don’t-break game against them.”
Cayden Zaccardi-Ware’s 13-yard gain and quarterback Tina Do’s 10-yard connection to Jilary Sanchez put Eden Prairie on Fairmont’s doorstep at the 6-yard line during the opener’s third series before Moore literally elevated her game and slammed the brakes on the drive with an interception.
Smith and Earhart later contained Eden Prairie’s rushing attack as Zaccardi-Ware and teammate Maleah Holloway did likewise in keeping Fairmont’s high-octane offense out of the end zone during a scoreless first half.
With 8 minutes remaining in the second half, Moore’s pivotal pickoff and ensuing 17-yard return put Fairmont’s offense in business at Eden Prairie’s 3. Despite a rare 5-yard infraction, Suckow zipped a 6-yard strike to Kylee Desjarlais to create a third-and-2 situation. Suckow flipped the 2-yard TD pass to Leiding to generate the opener’s first points. Suckow then threaded a 1-point conversion spiral to Moore for a 7-0 lead.
Jilary Sanchez then moved to quarterback and hit Holloway on a key 21-yarder before capping the following drive with a 16-yarder to Holloway for a TD with 5 minutes to go in regulation. Fairmont’s defense caused the Eden Prairie receiver to drop the potential tying conversion pass to keep the difference at 1. Smith and defensive company held their ground on a game-preserving fourth-down pass by Eden Prairie with less than a minute remaining.
The Cardinals then flipped the switch to high-energy offensive mode during Game 2 against Hopkins. Suckow delivered a record-setting 17-for-17 passing performance during the opening half to help Fairmont build a 28-0 lead by intermission. In fact, Suckow connected on three more consecutive tosses during the second half to wrap up a 23-for-26 effort through the airwaves and six scores to engineer the 41-0 rout.
Suckow found Leiding for a 10-yard game-opening strike before tossing a 1-point conversion pass to Norah Traetow for a quick 7-0 lead. The Cardinals’ junior signal-caller utilized the pass-catching skills of Kylee Desjarlais, Kaymarie Desjarlais and Leiding to march to paydirt.
Suckow then delivered a 20-yarder and a 12-yarder to Leiding to put up points on the scoreboard during the second possession against Hopkins. Suckow doubled the Cardinals’ lead to 14-0 with a 1-point spiral to Kaymarie Desjarlais.
Moore’s third pick of the two-game span created another quick scoring chance for Fairmont just five snaps later. Suckow’s 14-yard connection to Traetow reached the 1, where the junior quarterback found Leiding just across the goal line for six more points. Suckow fired a conversion pass to Kylee Desjarlais to extend the Cardinals’ margin to 21-0.
Moore pocketed her fourth interception of the game – and 10th of the season – two plays later to put Fairmont in scoring range at Hopkins’ 11. Kylee Desjarlais spun her way for an 8-yarder before Kaymarie Desjarlais made a scooping slide catch of the ensuing 3-yard TD throw from Suckow. Kylee Desjarlais’ reception of the conversion toss made it 28-0 at halftime.
Kaymarie Desjarlais kept Hopkins off the scoreboard during the final possession of the initial half by leaping and tipping a pass to Earhart for the interception with time winding down.
Suckow tossed a perfect 13-yard fade pass to Kaymarie Desjarlais to cap the Cardinals’ first series of the second half for a 34-point lead. Leamonie Wilson’s interception of Hopkins’ first play from scrimmage and return to the 12 created an early winning exit by Fairmont. Suckow found Traetow for an 11-yard scoring reception before the accurate-throwing passer zipped a 1-point conversion to Kylee Desjarlais to end the game at 41-0.
Suckow combined to complete 47 of 62 passes for 385 yards and seven Tds, with Leiding topping a talented receiving core with 17 catches for 116 yards and four scores. Kaymarie Desjarlais made 10 receptions for 86 yards and two Tds, while Traetow supplied nine grabs for 87 yards and one score.
Fairmont (4-2) travels to Lakeville South on Sunday, May 18, for games against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and Lakeville North, with Game 1 starting at 4 PM.

WATERVILLE – Oh, the difference a week of preparation can make in high school sporting events.
Fairmont defensive back Allissa Moore pocketed five interceptions – including a pair returned for touchdowns – while quarterback Audrina Suckow completed 39 of 60 passes for eight scores and zero interceptions to power the Cardinals to back-to-back victories over Lakeville North and Lakeville South, respectively, during girls flag football action Sunday in Waterville.
“I whole-heartedly believe in the theory that a lot can happen between Week 1 and Week 2 during fall football, and it proved true today,” said Fairmont head coach Mat Mahoney, whose Cardinal flag footballers coasted to an opening 39-19 triumph over North before avenging a Week 1 loss via a 40-33 cardiac comeback victory over South in Game 2. South flattened Fairmont 46-6 during the Cardinals’ first-ever flag football game last Sunday at Mahoney Field in Fairmont.
Week 2’s rematch between South and Fairmont appeared to continue the trend from 7 days prior as the Lakeville program built a 20-0 halftime lead on Sunday in Waterville.
“Allissa Moore, Leamonie Wilson, Chloe Darnell and our defense really made their presence known during the second half against Lakeville South by combining for an incredible (four) inteceptions – with pick-6s by Allissa and Leamonie putting points on the board for us,” said Mahoney, whose defense collected seven total pickoffs during the two-game span. “Audrina utilized seven different receivers, threw 8 touchdowns and did not commit a turnover as our offense picked it up a notch, too.”
Darnell’s interception slammed the brakes on South’s first play of the second half before Suckow fired a 1-yard scoring strike to Adriana Leiding. The sure-handed Leiding finished the doubleheader with a team-best 16 catches for 187 yards and four scores.
The Cardinals’ quarterback then zipped a 1-point conversion pass to Kaymarie Desjarlais to reduce Fairmont’s deficit to 20-7 before Wilson delivered a defensive gem for another quick six points only four plays later. Wilson intercepted a South pass and sprinted 40 yards to paydirt before Leiding grabbed a 1-point conversion pass from Suckow to inch within 20-14.
South quarterback Alexa Dobesh answered by hitting Caitlin Beauchamp on spirals of 18, 18 and 4 yards, respectively, to restore a 12-point lead during the ensuing series.
Suckow countered by hitting Kylee Desjarlais on a 13-yarder before rocketing three passes to Leiding for a total of 36 yards to set up Kylee Desjarlais’ 1-yard TD catch and her following 1-point conversion reception to whittle the Cardinals’ gap to 26-21.
Suckow then connected on 6 of 7 throws, with Kaymarie Desjarlais, Kylee Desjarlais, Leiding and Macy Smith each garnering passes to reach the 10-yard line. Suckow’s slant pass to the middle of the field ricocheted from Kaymarie Desjarlais’ sure hands to Kylee Desjarlais’ gloves to inch Fairmont ahead 27-26 with time winding down in the second 20-minute half.
Moore then delivered the most pivotal defensive gem of the game, picking off a Dobesh pass and motoring 35 yards for her second TD of the two-game span to stake the Cardinals to a 33-26 margin. Moore, however, was not done with her pick-pocketing as Fairmont freshman defensive back intercepted another South pass and returned the football to the opposing 10. Moore covered the remaining distance in two carries, capped by a 7-yard TD rumble over right end. Suckow connected on the 1-point conversion pass to Kylee Desjarlais for a 40-26 lead.
Dobesh made the game closer by finding Aubrey Beauchamp on an 11-yard scoring strike before converting the 1-pointer to Caitlin Beauchamp to inch South within seven, but Fairmont was able to run out the final 30 seconds.
In Game 1 against Lakeville North, Fairmont proved 100% efficient by cashing all four first-half possessions into Tds to build a 26-6 lead by intermission.
Leiding nabbed a 7-yard spiral from Suckow for the initial six points, the fleet-footed Leiding left nothing but a vapor trail on an ensuing 38-yard breakaway TD catch before Suckow zipped a 3-yarder to Kaymarie Desjarlais. Kylee Desjarlais corraled the following conversion pass for a 20-6 lead. Leiding capped the opening half with a 36-yard catch-and-sprint reception from Suckow to build a 20-point lead by the break.
Holding a 26-19 lead later in the second half, Kaymarie Desjarlais pocketed a 1-yard TD pass from Suckow before Leiding chipped in the 1-point conversion catch. Moore delivered two interceptions during the final 2 minutes of regulation, with her final defensive highlight being a 45-yard pick-6 return to close out the game at 39-19.
Kylee Desjarlais finished with 11 catches for 119 yards and two Tds for the Cardinals, while Kaymarie Desjarlais contributed five total receptions for two scores.
Fairmont (2-2) travels to Burnsville next Sunday (May 11) for games against Eden Prairie and Hopkins.

Lakeville South 46, Fairmont 6 - Waterville 24, Fairmont 13

4/27/25 Game Recaps - Charlie Sorrells

FAIRMONT – Fairmont appropriately kicked off its historic girls flag football campaign Sunday afternoon at legendary Thomas Mahoney Field in Fairmont during the first of the sport’s inaugural 6-week season.
While quarterback Alexa Dobesh threw for a game-best 193 yards – including five touchdowns to Caitlin Beauchamp – to power Lakeville South to a 46-6 victory during Fairmont’s debut and Alenka Jans tossed two TDs and delivered a pick-6 interception to help Waterville-Elysian-Morristown edge the hometown lineup 24-13 in Game 2, the Cardinals still etched their names in the school’s history books and their fans’ memories.
Quarterback Audrina Suckow delivered the Fairmont program’s first completed pass to Adriana Leiding – a 15-yarder in the first half against South – and connected for the Cardinals’ first passing score to Kylee Desjarlais via a 7-yard TD against WEM in Sunday’s Game 2. Suckow also fired the team’s initial 1-point PAT spiral to Kaymarie Desjarlais to etch the pair of siblings’ names into the archives.
The multi-tasking Suckow also scored the Cardinals’ first-ever flag football TD on a 12-yard run against South, while displaying her defensive skills against WEM by making the first-ever interception en route to two picks during the opening weekend.
“What a day,” said Fairmont head flag football coach Mat Mahoney, who’s also the Cardinals’ football mentor in the fall. “Ironically, the weather – mid-50s with a 20 mph wind – was similar to what we experience during the fall season, so it definitely felt appropriate for our historic debut of the sport.
“I think our coaching staff and players alike learned a lot about the game and ourselves against a very athletic Lakeville South team in our opener. We made some good adjustments between games, and the girls made some positive improvements during our second game against Waterville and were competitive right to the end.”
After WEM starting quarterback Lilly Hanson tossed a 45-yard scoring strike to Brooklyn Novack, Fairmont’s Maya Earhart deflected the 1-point conversion pass to keep the Cardinals’ deficit at 6-0 with 10 of the 20-minute first half expired.
Suckow’s ensuing 20-yard return on her interception put Fairmont at WEM’s 7-yard line before the senior signal-caller zipped a TD pass to Kylee Desjarlais. Suckow then staked the Cardinals to a 7-6 lead by finding Kaymarie Desjarlais on the 1-point conversion pass with 7:16 left in the first half.
Chloe Darnell later returned an interception to WEM’s 12 to put Fairmont on the doorstep, but Jans offset the defensive gem by returning her own pickoff to the house to swing a 12-7 lead back to the Buccaneers with only 1:22 left before intermission.
WEM’s Ellie Lamont and Fairmont’s Suckow exchanged interceptions to open the second half before the Bucs’ Robynn Schwichtenberg’s pickoff set up her own 7-yard TD catch from Jans for an 18-7 lead at the 15:35 juncture.
Quarterback Leamonie Wilson answered quickly for Fairmont by threading a pass to Allissa Moore, who eluded flag-grabbers for a 45-yard score to reduce the Cardinals’ deficit to 18-13 with 14 minutes remaining in regulation.
Moore displayed her defensive skills by pocketing an interception three series later only to see WEM’s Ellie Schlie counter with a pickoff one snap after. Jans spotted Novack for a 5-yard TD to create a 24-13 edge for WEM with 5:49 to go.
Suckow connected on passes of 11, seven and seven yards, respectively, to Leiding before finding Kaymarie Desjarlais on a 15-yarder to march downfield with time ticking away, but Paetyn Judd pocketed a pass toward the end zone to seal WEM’s win.
Suckow completed 10 of 18 passes for 88 yards and one TD for Fairmont, with Kaymarie Desjarlais and Leiding making five catches apiece for 51 and 40 yards, respectively, in Game 2.
Dobesh – who’s the ultimate multi-tasker at Lakeville South – connected on 9 of 15 passes for 193 yards and five scores in Game 1 against Fairmont. Dobesh, who also competes in volleyball, mountain biking, alpine skiing and track & field, fired scoring strikes of 28, 18, 35, 10 and 38 yards, respectively, to Caitlin Beauchamp. Beauchamp finished with a game-best seven receptions for 161 yards.
Suckow, who threw for 95 yards in the opener, scored the Cardinals’ lone TD against South via a 12-yard run with 1:40 left in the first 20-minute half. Leiding made three catches for 35 yards, Moore pocketed two passes for 48 yards, while Macy Smith grabbed one throw for 17 yards.
Fairmont (0-2) travels to Waterville on Sunday, May 4, for games against Burnsville and Lakeville South.
